On this trip 80 saplings were planted. Besides Phillipe,Thibault and Quentin,we also had an additional volunteer, 19 year old Kee Yan Jie from Penang. He had written to us in early July to volunteer for two weeks prior to his university admission. ( Yan Jie is a high achiever from SMJK Jit Sin Penang ,basketball player, sports event organiser and had previously volunteered in the aftermath of the Nepalese earthquake.) The tree planting progressed smoothly and the team was back in town by 1 pm.

Exploratory trip into untouched mossy forests of Batu Gangan and Sg Terla-30th June 2018
30th June 2018- Under the Kemaman Bitumen Save the Mossy Forest fund , we organised a trip into the untouched mossy forsts of Batu Gangan and Sg Terla Forests Reserves. These forests are on the eastern slope of Gunung Irau.( Over the years, few missing trekkers enroute to Irau has been found here !) 12 volunteers joined in including our resident orchid specialist Encik Embi Abdullah and resident photographer Encik Amran Nazar Khan. Aerial imagery of the site was also done.
As expected the findings on this trip did not disappoint as being more than 1400 m above sea level, the fauna was that of the cloud forest variety. Going upstream we found many polypipes sourcing water to the farms below but these dwindled as we climbed higher. The mosses enveloped the ground, stones in the rivers, fallen logs and tree trunks. Negiotiating upstream was tricky as the moss covered rocks were very slippery indeed.

Upcoming Activities for “Summer”
by Cheam May Choo
Although it is raining cats and dogs outside and Malaysia doesn’t have the 4 seasons, I like to think that “summer” is upon us. Come June and July, Cameron Highlands will see more visitors from the temperate countries, enjoying their summer vacation here. Bookings for local tours will rise and eateries dotting Tanah Rata and Brinchang will be busier than usual. In the mornings,4wd vehicles mainly landrovers in the tourism trade, filled with visitors will make a beeline to favourite hotspots in the mountains such as Gunung Brinchang. Jungle trails will also see more trekkers enjoying the forest. Come sundown if one strolls along Tanah Rata main street, languages heard will not only be English,Malay, Chinese and Indian but also French, German, Spanish , Japanese and a few more.
For our environmental society, we will have more requests than usual for volunteer work from visitors from the Western Countries. This year we would like to welcome 3 students from France namely Thibault, Quentin and Philippe who will be spending 2 months here for volunteer work during their summer break.
Below is our upcoming activities for the month of June and July. Visitors are welcome to join but should pay for their own transport and please contact our office at least 2 days prior.
