English based Environmental Education Programme in Convent Primary School on the 17th February 2016
An English based Environmental Education programme was held in SK Convent ( Convent Primary School) on the 17 th February 2016. Around 60 students from Standard 3 to Standard 6 participated. The programme was conducted by Miss Elucia Yong, (our regular REACH volunteer and also an undergraduate majoring in English) and assisted by Datin Aseema, Puan Mazlira, Miss Saras, Miss Geogina and Convent School teachers.
As with other similar programmes that we have held, there was first a video presentation and discussion on the envirionmental problems here. 
English based Environmental Awareness Programme at SK Ringlet
8th November 2015
An English-based environmental awareness programme was conducted by REACH on the 5th of November at SK Ringlet. The event was carried out by REACH committee members, Datin Aseema and Puan Mazlira. It was aimed at students between the ages of 10 to 12 with the intention of inculcating the love for mother nature in them .
The event mainly revolved around Datin Aseema and Puan Mazlira interacting with the students about the environment and everything in relevance, such as its importance, the causes, effects and ways to prevent pollution and others.
Worksheets were given out to the students for them to colour and to test their knowledge on the environment.
Our Trash to Treasure competition
8th October 2015
This recycling competition which is aimed at encouraging primary school students to use their creativity to reinvent recyclable items was held at the Convent Primary School General Purpose Hall in Tanah Rata. This event was organized by REACH and coordinated by REACH committee members, Puan Mazlira and Datin Aseema.
A total of 13 teams from 8 different primary schools all over Cameron Highlands took part in this competition. The schools that took part include SK Convent (3 teams), SJKT Tanah Rata (2 teams), SJKC Bertam Valley (2 teams), SJKT Shum Yip Leong (2 teams), SJKC Tanah Rata (1 team), SJKT Blue Valley (1 team), SK Ringlet (1 team), and SK Tanah Rata (1 team). All the participants were each given a complimentary REACH cap at the beginning of the event.
5th August 2015-English based Environmental Education programme in SMKSAS Tanah Rata
This newly started progamme aims to create environmental awareness in schools using English as a medium of instruction. On the 5th of August 2015, the 2nd such activity was held in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Ahmad Shah and we are pleased with the response. Datin Aseema and Puan Mazlira were assisted by teachers from SMKSAS Miss J.Vejaya Jayaraman who was the main coordinator and Miss P.Chitrah, and also fellow committee member Dr Koh Gim Lan and volunteers Miss Melody Woon, Miss Elucia Yong, Miss Geogina Khong, Miss Anushka, Miss Piyadarshini. Around 100 students participated ranging in age from 13 years to 18 years ( ie Form 1 to Form 6 students).
English based Environmental Awareness Programme Commences
28th July 2015-Our first programme to raise environmental awareness in schools in Cameron Highlands started in SJK Tamil,Ringlet The program was conducted in English and around 25 students participated.
We started with showing a video on environmental degradation in Cameron Highlands. After reflecting on what they saw and a short discussion…we did a show and tell on transport toys which we had taken from the kids .. This was followed by a lively group discussion .. After this they did a work sheet based on what they had learnt .. Finally they made a collage based on nature .. On another Manila card they wrote out all the new environment related words they had learnt .. It was a great learning experience from the kids both from the point of improving their language proficiency and expressing their concerns about what is happening in Cameron highlands .

Editor’s Note: This programme is the brainchild of Datin Aseema Singhal and Puan Mazlira with the aims of creating environmental awareness as well as improving English language proficiency by bringing such programmes to the schools. The above activity was the 1st one held and was conducted by Datin Aseema and assisted by Puan Mazlira.In the coming week, a similar programme will be held at SMKSAS Tanah Rata on the 5th of August 2015 from 3pm to 4.30pm for 75 students.
