Reforestation Update 20th May 2015

20.5.2015

At the 4th Greening Cameron Task Force meeting today, officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment NRE updated the attendees ,which constituted representatives from local government departments and non governmental agencies on the reforestation programme .

The Greening Cameron Task Force ( Pasukan Petugas Khas Penghijauan) is basically a team formed by  NRE ( which also included involvement of NGOs) to undertake reforestation in Cameron Highlands following the Governments crackdown on illegal land clearings and foreign workers which started late last year.

To date there has been a few reforestation activities and below is the calendar of such events for 2015

The next reforestation activity which will be held on the 30th of May 2015, will again  be in Gunung Siku (in Compartment 5 Plot 3 ) covering 4 hectares. Details of this event and the site is in the following article.

There will be 2 more reforestation exercises in Gunung Siku in July and August 2015. This would be followed by reforestation exercises in the Forest Reserves of Bertam, Terla and Sg Kial in the last 4 months of the year.

Since endemic trees will be used for the entire reforestation project, there are ongoing wilding collection exercises. (See diagram below.) The wildings are collected from the forest reserves of Gunung Siku, Ringlet, Mentigi and Gunung Berembun. These young plants are usually very close to the mother plant and would not thrive anyway because of competition for resources. collection of wilding

The species of trees collected are shown below:

wilding speciesBy the end of the 1st year an estimated 15,000 trees would have been planted .There would be a 3 monthly ‘maintenance’  of the trees for the next 24 months after planting. All these bring the estimated cost of this Greening of Cameron Highlands 2015 programme to RM 1.8 million.

This Greening of Cameron Highlands project which was initially met with much skeptism,  is gathering momentum.
