27th October 2015
Do you know that there are approximately 4500 different kinds of TOXIC chemicals found in ONE cigarette alone? Or that 1 cigarette butt takes at least 25 YEARS to decompose?
These two alarming facts and so much more are some of the many reasons why the citizens of Cameron Highlands and people in general should be more aware regarding the dangers of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.
On the 27th of October at 8:00PM, CHBAR carried out a health campaign for the locals of Brinchang at the Hainan Association Hall for this specific reason. We care about the people and our hometown too much to ignore the fact that smoking kills at least 10,000 Malaysians yearly, and exposes our fresh, clean highland air to hazardous contaminants.
During the health campaign, REACH volunteers, Shen-Ly and Mandarin translator Melody, shared about the health hazards of smoking to smokers themselves, to the people around them and to the environment. The talk included other aspects of smoking like steps to stop, nicotine withdrawal symptoms and how to cope with them, ways to manage cigarette cravings, and many more.
Our aim was to encourage smokers to kick the bad habit and non-smokers to continue to live a tobacco-smoke free life.Other programmes included were health screening by the local Health Department, slide presentations, water testing, anti-smoking booths and free Influenza immunization by the REACH team.
The campaign finally came to an end at about 10:30PM.We hope that this health campaign had benefited those who came and that they will continue to pass on the knowledge of what they have learned to those whom they love.
