22nd August 2016-The above programme is organised by REACH ( Datin Aseema and Puan Mazlira) in cooperation with the local education department PPD and the school authorities headed by Madam Seng Wai Cheng.
Upon arrival at the school, which was located at the centre of Bertam Valley Village, our Reach team was greeted by a lively group of 254 students. (Widening works was ongoing at the nearby Bertam river but the local folks seemed to have taken the noise and higher amounts of dust in their stride.) Also on hand to greet them was Madam Seng, the headmistress, her group of teachers, Mr Wong Seng Yee ,our committee member who happens to be the vice-president of the Parents Teachers Association for Bertam Valley School.
After the introductions, Miss Melody Woon, our chief facilitator spoke on “Recycling and the effects of improper disposal of waste on the environment”. She emphasised on the reasons and the method of recycling and separating waste.
Children being children, many were all ears and excited at showing that they knew how to separate their recyclables into the proper bins. A few, although physically present, were actually “somewhere else”.
It is fortunate that we had Melody (who came back from KL just to volunteer for this programme) to give the talk as she made it an ‘inclusive one’.
She was able to switch between Mandarin and English, and engage the attention of the majority of the students, squatting orderly in the hall.
With the help of the teachers,Saras and volunteers ( Geogina, Kesav, Ka Fai, Ka Heng) the students were then separated into 4 groups according to their ages. The youngest group was the preschoolers. They were tasked with colouring.
Ages 7 to 8 were tasked with completing “an environmental superhero” and colouring it. And they jumped right into it.
The next group ages 9 to 10 had to a word search and exit a maze. They were just as enthusiastic
The oldest group ages 11 to 12 were asked to do a poster with an environmental slogan which they performed well given the time limit.
Postcards were given out to all the students and Reach Bird T-shirts were given to the winners from each group. Datin Aseema presented Reach bird book “ Montane Birds of Cameron Highlands ” to Madam Seng for the school library. Meanwhile Bertam Valley school presented a basket of locally produced fruits and vegetables to REACH.
In summary, the event was successfully carried out thanks to all those present. Reach would also like to thank Miss Elucia Yong for preparing the teaching material. We hope to carry out this programme in more schools in the future.
