REACH Community Stream Investigation (CSI) Programme 2015

The aim of the CSI programme, is to create a sense of awareness among the students and teachers in the care of the river both aesthetically and its importance to us as drinking water source. It is basically a programme whereby participants are taught on how to identify certain living organisms in the rivers and use the presence of these organisms (macroinvertebrates)to indicate the state of health of the particular river (bio-indicators).

CSI programmes are conducted by volunteers of REACH with Dr Liau Tai Leong in charge. The programme will start in March 2015 once the necessary approvals are obtained and will extend to the end of the year. For each session the number of participants will be limited to 30. The funding for this year’s programme for local students will be from Tunku Imran and Mr Paul Chuah. Volunteers are invited to assist Dr Liau in this programme once the schedule is up.

Participants will be briefed on REACH as a community based organization, the biodiversity of the montane forest and the environmental problems in Cameron Highlands.

Then participants will be taught on how to identify macro invertebrates through a manual and their importance in indicating water quality. Simple chemical tests will also be taught and finally a river walk to identify sources of pollution to the river, how human activities affect the quality of water, and the difference between a natural river and one that has been modifed by man.
