Mossy Forest n Biodiversity site Activity on the 26th September 2016-SK Convent Tanah Rata
Below are the pictures of the Mossy Forest and Biodiversity Activity on the 26th of September 2016 for Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Tanah Rata. The programme was supervised by Miss Melody Woon , our regular volunteer. As evident by the pictures, the students and teachers had a good time and they learnt a lot about the mossy forest from our guide Mr Satya.

Reforestation using the Malayan Mountain Ash

The Malayan Mountain Ash (also known as Weinmannia Fraxinea, or Weinmannia Blumei), is a tree indigenous to the Cameron Highlands. It is often found on disturbed ground, especially on slopes. For this reason it was chosen as a tree suitable for planting in the REACH reforestation area next to the Biodiversity Centre. It was also chosen to increase the biodiversity of the reforestation area.
The tree has a few distinguishable features which are useful for identification. The easiest is the leaves (shown on Figure 1). These are small, oval shaped, and grow out symmetrically, 180 degrees from each other. The young leaves are red in colour. A particularly individual and noticeable feature is the ‘stipules’ at the base of the stem. These are a pair of semi-circular leaves as shown in Figure 1. The bark of the tree is grey to dark brown. The tree can grow up to 40 m tall. The trunk tends to be narrow (60-120cm) and straight. When in bloom, the inflorescences (flower systems) come in pairs of 1-3 long finger like extensions, with many small white petals.

Reforestation is one of the core activities of REACH . Currently REACH has 2 main reforestation programmes ie

- Reforestation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
1. Reforestation programmes in Gunung Brinchang
This began in 2001 in an illegally cleared land on a ridge in Gunung Brinchang.It is conducted from funds from private bodies. As this area is almost fully reforested, for 2015 the reforestation exercises were incorporated with other biodiversity activities such as bird watching, mossy forest educational walks, fertilizing the planted trees.. For future programmes it would include ‘planting’ epiphytes such as orchids onto existing trees.

On the 31st January 2016, Malaysian Association Of Tour & Travel Agents(MATTA) organized a reforestation event which was held at the REACH Biodiversity Center located on a ridge in Gunung Brinchang…
There were around 45 participants and upon arrival at the Biodiversity Centre, they gathered for a briefing by Mr Satya Murthy, our chief tour guide.
A day in the mountains under the glorious sun
29th September 2015-22 students from SJKC Kg Raja with their teachers were unfazed by the ongoing haze and did not postpone their mossy forest trip. Their reward was an enjoyable outing in the mossy forests in Gunung Brinchang under the warm morning sunshine. Skies were blue, air invigorating and views panaromic.

Mossy Forest Tours and Reforestation Continues for our local kids -2015
30th July 2015
25 Standard 5 students from SJK(C) Brinchang were the first in Cameron Highlands this year to join in REACH’s reforestation at our Bio-Diversity Centre program. Accompanied by two teachers and three REACH volunteers: Elucia, Geogina and myself, we squashed ourselves into three 4WD vehicles and hit the road at approximately 9.15am.
Our first stop was the famous Mossy Forest at G. Brinchang. En route even though it was a very bumpy ride, we managed to catch a glimpse of a large niltava and its mate as well as a Fire tufted barbet. The rolling green hills of tea were also a fine sight to behold as we made our way up the mountain.
After an educational briefing session by our guide, Satya, who shared a little of his store of knowledge of the thousands of species of herbs and fungi in Cameron Highlands, we entered the mossy forest to take a look for ourselves the fabled beauty of the forests of our own hometown.
